The original Battlestar Galactica series was a lot better than some people give it credit for.
The characters are likeable, the stories exciting, and the effects were (for the time on TV) excellent. Yes, there are a couple clunker episodes, but even those have their own charm and are entertaining.
I particularly liked the tie in to ancient Egyptial culture. The show had a great look - and the command center of the Galactica looked like something really out of NASA. They spent a lot of money on that set, and made sure it looked real.
While it is clearly a product of it's time, it still holds up fairly well and is very entertaining. It's a shame that ABC cancelled the show after the one season because it seemed like Larson and the production staff got clued in to what worked best after a half season of meandering through quickly thought up stories (remember, Galactica was originally going to be a series of four TV movies, and ABC liked it so much they ordered a full series with very little time to write the scripts so the stand alone episodes late in the season were thrown together faster than they should have been).
There is a lot more good than bad with the original Galactica.
