Had the internet been as big in 1998 as it is now the departure of Claudia Christian as Commander Susan Ivanova (promoted to Captain on her last episode) would have made for a ton of discussion on message boards, and the comparisons between her and Tracy Scoggins as Captain Elizabeth Lochley would have been practically endless.
I'm re-watching Season 5 for the second time, and am 6 episodes in. At this point Lochley has yet to show the sense of humor that Ivanova had. She's colder, harder, and more by the book military than Ivanova - and a lot less quirky. In fact, she's closer to what JMS originally planned for Ivanova (Claudia Christian has noted several times that she asked for Ivanova to show a sense of humor that matched her own quirky sense of humor and JMS slowly added that in over the course of the first season).
Lochley isn't nearly as likeable as Ivanova up to this point, but my memory of the character is that she lightens up a bit and develops a bit of a sense of humor. Never as much as Ivanova - Lochley is in command, where Ivanova had the luxury of being second in command, so being that much of a smartass would be inappropriate for the commanding officer.
I don't remember much of the fan reaction to Lochley as the fifth season was unfolding, but I also don't remember a whole lot of negativity, either. I do remember people being both bummed and pissed that Claudia didn't return for the final season. Tracy Scoggins did a good job, but Claudia Christian was like a force of nature - like a hurricane. Hurricane Susan.
