In the original Stargate movie James Spader played Dr. Daniel Jackson, a very geeky, nerdy, but insightful archaeologist who thinks outside the box. His performance was very good.
When it came time to recast the role for TV the producers found Michael Shanks, an actor who could play up the geeky angle of the character, but who could (and did) add a greater sense of ethics and morality to Dr. Jackson. He was also able to add the toughness that would be gained through years of working as part of a military unit.
Ultimately, Shanks was the superior Daniel Jackson. By a wide margin.
