So is it a disappointing movie? Or is it a very good Comic Book Superhero movie that just isn't as good as it's predecessor?
Or is it both?
Honestly? It was a little disappointing because it wasn't as good as the premise made it out to be (let's face it, Ultron is the Avengers main recurring bad guy in the comics, and the movie didn't quite translate that to the screen as well as it could have), but it's still a fun, entertaining movie - as Comic Book Superhero movies should be.
I tend to think the main problem with the movie is that the creation of Ultron was rushed. There should have been a little more discussion among ALL the Avengers about the concept of Ultron and what he was supposed to be and supposed to do before Tony & Bruce stumble on to the programming in the Mind Gem. And then after they stumble on to that programming there should have been more discussion about how to create Ultron - more trial and error.
Aside from that, Ultron should have been a little more menacing. He was a little too human and seemed to lack that arrogant superiority that Ultron has in the comics. In the comics Ultron makes no bones about despising humans and how he thinks of them as lesser than him - and as an infestation to be wiped out. In the movie Ultron seems to be willing to give humanity a chance to jump start it's evolution through a massive disaster. If humanity can survive that and come out stronger than he will believe that we deserve to survive. If we don't come out stronger then he'll finish us off. In the comics he wouldn't give us that chance.
Beyond those two issues, though, the movie is actually really good. The action scenes are exciting, and the actors all work together well in their super roles. There is a genuine chemistry there between both the actors and the characters. They work well together. And much of the dialogue is witty, too. Whedon is always good for some witty repartee.
So, overall, while the movie is a little disappointing (because it didn't live up to it's full potential and isn't quite as good as the first one), it is still a good Comic Book Superhero movie.
