The pilot episode for Firefly, "Serenity," is an outstanding Science Fiction TV movie. It sets up the series beautifully and really does a great job of introducing the characters and the galaxy they live in. It is well written, well paced/edited, and well acted by a superb cast. It's exciting, engaging, dramatic, witty, and, most importantly - FRESH. It's a new and different take on the spacefaring Science Fiction genre.
So why the hell did Fox shelve the (very important for continuity and character introductions) pilot and air it last?
Had they aired the pilot first, and given the follow up episodes continued promotion they might have had a mid level hit on their hands that would have only grown with time (much like the sales of Firefly on DVD and, later, Blu Ray).
