I've been going through the entire series for the third time, and I'm nearing the end of Season 5 and I've got to say it's been one hell of a surprise - almost a revelation.
Season 5 has several great twists and turns, and the overall theme of the season (consequences of your actions) really hits home towards the end of the season. It may not have the instant WOW factor of Seasons 3 and 4, but it certainly has a lot of substance. The writing is consistently excellent, and the actors are in the zone.
My old evaluation of the 5th Season as a big letdown after the previous two seasons was way off the mark. It may not quite be up to the level of those two seasons, but it isn't all that far off. JMS did a great job of reworking his 5th Season plan (which was thrown off by the cancellation after Season 4 - and the, "After the last minute," rescue of the series by TNT).
I wasn't quite looking forward to Season 5 the way I had seasons 2-4, but next time (and, oh - yeah, there will be a next time, and a time after that) I'll have four seasons that really get me excited to put a DVD in the player. (And even the first season is really enjoyable - just watching the pieces put into place and the style taking shape is fun.)
