Now THAT's a great first episode!
Oh, wait. Did TNT screw that up?
Seriously, how in the world could TNT see this episode and say, "No, we need a new pilot, one that sets up the mission and characters better than this episode does."
Racing the Night has some great action, some really good effects, and has an excellent story. What more could you want? The mission is pretty well laid out, and the characters are all pretty much introduced effectively. More reveals (B5 style) about who they each really were would have come little bits at a time, giving the characters more depth in the long run.
Yes, the uniforms were kind of just, "OK," but they weren't bad. They could have been changed without forcing JMS to write what were, essentially, 8 prequel episodes.
I give Racing the Night a 9 out of 10. It's Babylon 5 good. Maybe not B5 at it's best, but as good as the average season 2 episode, and that's impressive for a first episode.
