While the original Stargate movie was quite good, the series took the concept and characters to a completely different (and much higher) level. The idea that the stargate just went to one world was kind of silly (why go to all that trouble, especially since Abydos was so desolate).
Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner did a phenomenal job of building on what the movie did and making it bigger, bolder, and yet more human all at the same time. The characters became more engaging, and the storylines became more interesting.
And the cast! Richard Dean Anderson as Jack O'Neill was simply inspired casting. His warmth and sense of humor gave the character a lot more depth. And Michael Shanks totally took the character of Daniel Jackson to a higher level. Shanks is a fantastic actor, and he really did a great job in the role.
Then you had Amanda Tapping as Captain/Colonel Carter. She was a great addition to the show, as was Christopher Judge as Teal'c.
The movie was good, but the show was great.

I also enjoy the show more than the movie, and it's not just because the show expands more on the characters. The pilot itself, with the new characters and actors, is much more fun and exciting than the original. The way Shanks and Anderson portrayed their respective characters was much more enjoyable than James Spader and Kurt Russell and the addition of Samantha Carter, Teal'c and all the other characters was simply amazing.
