When Daniel Craig was first cast as James Bond he was met by a chorus of skepticism. Or flat out rejection.
He looks too old (Craig looked older than he really was). He's not good looking enough. He doesn't look like the cinematic Bond. The criticism were all based on what he looked like, and it was understandable - he stood out among the Bond actors as the least good looking of the bunch and the one who looked most like a working class guy.
And then Casino Royale came out.
Craig was re-evaluated by a lot of fans. Not everyone accepted him in the role as the character was written differently, but he was more believable in the action scenes than any previous Bond actor, and he was very good with the dramatic aspects of the character. Quantum of Solace didn't help his standing with his remaining naysayers as the movie was generally considered to be a disappointment (mostly due to the direction, but partly due to the script).
And then Skyfall came out.
With the release of Skyfall Daniel Craig was truly re-evaluated by his remaining critics and came up on the positive side for many of them. Skyfall was an excellent Bond movie and Craig's performance as Bond was one of the strengths of the movie. The end of the movie set up the potential for Craig's Bond to finally become a little closer to the Bond that had been on the screen for over 40 years prior to the release of Casino Royale, and that leaves his few remaining doubters hopeful.
Spectre comes out in November, and the trailers look excellent. Of course, the whole point of a trailer is to make the movie look good and to sell tickets, but there is a feeling that this movie is genuinely going to be outstanding and that Craig is going to shine as 007.
We'll find out soon enough.
