J. Michael Straczynski confirmed yesterday that Babylon 5 will return as a rebooted series on the CW network. This news sent shock waves through the B5 fanbase. At this point, there are more questions than answers, and even JMS himself doesn't know all the answers yet.
He is working on the script for the pilot, and, undoubtedly, working up his new 5 year arc. The one thing he has said for sure is it won't be a reMAKE. This will be a new story, one that will not take place in the same B5 universe we saw in the original series and Crusade. This will be an alternate universe kind of take on Babylon 5. The big question is this - will he use the same characters and recast, or go with all new characters?
JMS said he is not looking to repeat himself or rehash what he's already done. He's looking to challenge himself, so there is a very strong possibility that we may see a whole new bunch of characters carrying on the legacy of B5. Then again, he may feel strongly about these characters and want to refine them or even redefine them. The writing process has only started recently, so things are in flux.
There can be no question, though, that this will give a boost to the profile of the original series, and perhaps that will lead to the remastered episodes making their way to Blu Ray. One can only hope...

Probably the most important aspect of this reboot won't be the show itself, but the impact it has on the profile of the original series.
The reboot has given Babylon 5 a second big profile boost in 2021 (the first being when the remastered episodes hit HBO Max early in the year). This will continue as the new show approaches it's first airing. While that could be two years away, there will be stories about the new show along the way, and each one will reference the original show.
That's huge.
And if the new show is even close to being as good as the original it will be even bigger.
So, even if you aren't a fan of the idea of a rebooted B5, there is a huge positive that's coming out of the reboot. Who knows, you might even be pleasantly surprised by the new show. With JMS writing and producing it there is a very good chance the show will be really, really good.

The Reboot is still alive, but the final home for the show is up in the air. The current Writers and Actors strikes have slowed the process down, but, according to JMS himself, the project is still moving forward.
