This list features an even dozen of Steve Ditko's finest works...
So we just passed the 60th birthday for our favorite wall crawling superhero, your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man! The 13th Dimension just did their own Top Ditko ASM covers list (Top 13, to stick with the theme), and that was a really great idea. Some of the selections left me a little baffled, but, hey - it's all subjective. We all have our own favorites! So, I thought, "Let's do our own list," and here it is!
Let's count down to the #1 ASM cover by Steve Ditko, starting with...
#12 - Amazing Spider-Man 20
This is the first appearance of The Scorpion, who has always been one of my favorite villains. Mac Gargan isn't all that bright, but he wasn't all that bad, either. Sure, probably some petty crimes here and there, but he wasn't a major threat to society... Until J. Jonah Jameson bankrolled a scientists experiment, attempting to create a new superhero to capture Spider-Man. Well, the best laid plans, and all... Gargan got a little nuts as a result of the experiment. Mentally unstable. Aggressive. Anti-authoritarian. Opportunistic. And slightly psychotic (not as bad as some of Spidey's enemies, but he was dangerously violent and unstable).
Ditko's cover was top notch, and really brought home the fact that The Scorpion is stronger than Spider-Man. How can Spidey beat someone stronger than he is? Well, he almost always seems to find a way.
#11 - Amazing Spider-Man 4
The Sandman has always been a tricky opponent for Spider-Man. He's either impossible to hurt with a punch (sandy and all), but he can harden his molecules to be like rock, meaning he can puch Spidey pretty darned hard! Peter's always had to be clever to beat old Sandy.
This is a great panel cover. Laid out in four panels, it basically tells the story of how the Sandman is different from any of Spider-Man's other enemies. Really compelling stuff, well drawn by Ditko!
